2022 Preview

Winning is Acadiana football's business and quite frankly, business has been good.

Since taking over as head coach in 2018, head coach Matt McCullough has led the Rams to four consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins as well as consecutive state titles in 2019 and 2020.

One could categorize 2021 as a rebuilding year even though Acadiana advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A playoffs and racked up 11 wins along the way. The Rams return 13 starters from that team along with an abundant amount of talent which gives the team a stronger outlook heading into the fall.

Offensively, the Rams will have loads of speed through the air and on the ground with a receiver corp led by a speedy sophomore in Russell Babineaux who is already drawing interest from multiple Power 5 programs. Acadiana also returns its 1,000-yard rusher from a year ago in senior tailback Keven Williams, who scored 26 touchdowns last season.

An experienced offensive line will give the Rams' vaunted veer offense the advantage against some of the top talent in the state this year. Senior tackle Jaden Guillory (6'4, 345) along with junior center Jackson Hammond (6'0, 285) are among the leaders working inside the trenches to make headway.

McCullough noted that depth could serve as an issue early in the season with two guys coming back at each level. Nevertheless, with athletes such as senior defensive back Jaylen Lawerence and junior defensive linemen Dominick McKinley leading the fray, any doubt of the unit underperforming could serve as a high mistake from opposing teams.\

The Rams travel over to Lafayette Christian to begin the season with what is sure to be one of the top openers of the 2022 season. Acadiana's only other non-district tilt will be against the storied John Curtis Patriots on Oct. 14. An eight-game district slate takes up the rest of the season with important games against Sulphur (9/9), Southside (10/21), Carencro (10/28) and Barbe (11/4) circled on the calendar.
