2023 preview

It would be safe to say the Airline Vikings under first-year head coach Justin Scogin were the surprise team in District 1-5A during the 2022 season. After starting off the season with three consecutive losses, the switch flipped into the on position in district play as the Vikings were undefeated, winning seven straight games before falling in the first round of the playoffs. Though 30 lettermen have departed the program due to graduation, Scogin is looking for many of his returning 25 lettermen to step up and fill the void in what should be an even more competitive season, especially in district play.

“The Vikings will look to some key returners on offense and defense to step into leadership roles for the 2023 season,” Scogin said. “Also, we will look to some younger, inexperienced players to replace some key starters, particularly along the offensive and defensive lines. But we are aiming to build on our success from last year what should be an even stronger district this year.”

One area where the Vikings are set is at the quarterback position as junior Ben Taylor returns for his second year as the starter for Scogin. Taylor completed 60 percent of his passes a year ago, throwing for 3,098 yards and 37 touchdowns with just one interception. His primary target will likely be senior Bob Patterson, who caught 30 passes for 522 yards and four scores in 2022. Senior running back Tre Jackson, who ran for 733 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, should also see added involvement in the passing game.

Working out of the 50 scheme, the Viking defense has seven returning starters from last year, which should help alleviate some of the pressure on the offense. Senior standouts Brayden Linton, Sincere Walker and Aydin Ashworth provide much-needed experience on the back side of the defense as the defensive front five develop.
