Thirty-seven years after leading Archbishop Shaw to its first state football championship, Coach Hank Tierney has once again etched his name in Louisiana high school football history. Guiding the Eagles to a 28-25 victory over E.D. White in the Division II Select championship game, Tierney capped a remarkable season and earned the title of GeauxPreps 4A Coach of the Year.
The state championship win marked a triumphant conclusion to a 12-2 season, highlighted by an 11-game winning streak that showcased the Eagles’ growth. For Shaw, this state title was their first since 1987 and the culmination of Tierney’s three-year journey to restore the program to its former glory following his return in 2021.
Affectionately known as “The West Bank Legend,” Tierney’s career came full circle with this victory. After an initial 19-year tenure at Shaw, where he led the program to four Prep Classic appearances, Tierney embarked on coaching stints at West Jefferson and Ponchatoula before coming back to Marrero. His leadership since returning has been the driving force behind Shaw’s resurgence.
“This is so hard to do,” Tierney reflected after the championship win. “I’m just so thrilled for our school, our community, and these young men. Shaw is on a tremendous upsurge, and I think this will help the school and community even more.”
The Eagles’ road to the title was filled with challenges, none greater than in the championship game itself. Shaw overcame three deficits against a resilient E.D. White team in a clash that tested their mettle. Michigan signee Jasper Parker electrified the game with a 62-yard touchdown run, while quarterback Mason Wilson and wide receiver Jacob Washington connected for two pivotal touchdown passes.
Jacob Washington, who earned Most Outstanding honors, delivered a standout performance with eight receptions for 105 yards and two touchdowns, including a dramatic 35-yard catch just before halftime that shifted momentum. “Jacob was a well-deserved MVP,” Tierney said. “That’s why he’s going to Michigan. He’s capable of playing like that every game.”
Tierney’s ability to inspire and adapt was on full display as Shaw’s offense amassed 365 total yards, including 254 on the ground. Meanwhile, the defense delivered critical stops late in the game to secure the state championship.
The victory not only adds a second state title to Tierney’s résumé as Shaw’s head coach but also cements his legacy with six championship game appearances in his storied career.
Congratulations to Coach Hank Tierney and the Archbishop Shaw Eagles for an unforgettable season and a well-deserved honor as GeauxPreps 4A Coach of the Year!
