Hannan the New No.1 in Louisiana: VSN / GeauxPreps Volleyball Power 25 Poll – After Week 6
by: VSN Staff // GeauxPreps.com Partner
Just prior to the Catholic League Tournament in late September Hannan coach Bekki Bonnaffee made a few changes to her lineup. Moving an All-State libero to outside hitter, an outside hitter to libero, and going more to a 5-1 offense.
Since that time, the Hawks have gone 18-3, winning 11-straight including a perfect 5-0 mark at their Hannan Fall Classic in which they handed St. Thomas More its first loss of the season.
14 voters across the state have taken notice as Hannan received seven of a possible 14 first-place votes and narrowly edged STM as the new No.1 team in this week’s VSN/GeauxPreps Volleyball Power 25 poll.
STM, who followed the 2-0 loss to Hannan with another 2-0 loss to unranked Lakeshore slipped to No.2. The Cougars had only lost three sets all season coming into Hannan’s Fall Classic, lost five sets in a row at one point.
Slidell who began the week with a 3-0 loss to Country Day before finishing the week with four straight wins slipped one spot to No.3.
Country Day’s 3-0 week included the sweep vs Slidell jumped one spot into No. 4.
Mt. Carmel who began the week with a 3-1 loss to Haynes slipped two spots and rounds out the Top 5.

1. Hannan (25-6 overall, 20-5 vs LA, 7-0 week)…A 7-0 week has Hannan on an 11-game win streak…The Hawks started the week with a 3-0 win vs Mandeville and a 3-1 win vs No.22 SJA…5-0 and winners of their own Hannan Tournament…Friday winners vs No.25 NLC (2-1) and Lakeshore (2-0)…Then straight set winners vs No.1 STM, No.7 Haynes, and Mandeville
2. STM (22-2, 21-2 vs LA, 4-2 week )…After not losing a set in a month, STM lost 5 sets in a row resulting in their first two losses of the season…Week started with a 3-0 win vs Westgate…Two wins to starts Hannan Tournament on Friday vs No.7 Haynes and Mandeville…Saturday started with back-to-back 2-0 losses to No.4 Hannan and unranked Lakeshore. Lost first set vs No.25 NLC but came back strong winning 2-1 (21-25, 25-10, 15-9 )
Coach’s Comments: “Missing a starter on Saturday, lost to Hannan in their own gym, then couldn’t bounce back having uncharacteristically error ridden game against Lakeshore immediately following loss to Hannan.
“Good lesson for our team overall to be more resilient in the face of adversity. In this ultimate relationship sport, we need every player out there ready and willing to play their best game, regardless of the circumstances. Anything less than that would be toxic. Excited to see how my players respond as we look to finish this season off strong.” Jes Burke
3. Slidell (29-2, 4-1 week)…Started week with a 3-0 loss to No.5 Country Day (19-25, 22-25, 23-25)…Beat No.24 Northshore 3-0…Went 3-0 winning AOL Tournament not losing a set in wins vs No.10 Ben Franklin, No.11 Hahnville, and De La Salle

Coach’s Comments: “I’m happy with the way we finished the week strong at the AOL tournament against solid competition. However, I really want us to have more consistent performances in those super tough matches like against Country Day.
“In that match, it wasn’t the great things that Country Day was doing that frustrated me. It was the amount of unforced errors we had. I don’t mind the ones that we were forced into, because of Country Day’s system and skill level. I think we need to clean up the ones that don’t really have anything to do with our opponent. We did a much better job of that on Saturday at AOL.” Danny Tullis
4. Country Day (18-7 overall, 14-4 vs LA, 3-0 week)…Three 3-0 sweeps vs McGehee, No.2 Slidell, and No.23 SSA

Coach’s Comments: “Those two games are big wins for us. It’s a good October start. Those wins will help get our momentum going as we end the month with a stretch of touch matches and tournaments. Cadie and Ania led the team in hitting from the outside, while Hayden did a great job blocking and had some time kills in the middle.
