“Mind Over Matter”: Broadmoor Named GeauxPreps Football Team of the Week

Broadmoor is 3-0. That is where Jerome Wiltz’s first month as head coach has brought the Buccaneers football program, but it is a place the team hasn’t visited in twenty years, and they hope that it is simply a product of the process. Through three weeks, Broadmoor has outscored its opponents 81-26, earning the title of GeauxPreps Football Team of the Week for Week 3.

Last season, Broadmoor finished 3-7, and from 2023 through 2025, the program won just six games combined. Wiltz served as the defensive coordinator for three of those seasons and took over the head coaching role this year. For Wiltz, a football veteran with a 16-year coaching career and alumnus of Cecilia High School, the transformation began far away from X’s and O’s. Addressing past issues with attendance and discipline, Wiltz set out to improve accountability, mental toughness, and resilience first.

“The most important thing to me… it’s more than just football,” Wiltz told me. “I brought the Lord to them first, to build their relationship up with Christ so they understand who they are and who Christ is.”

That spiritual foundation has yielded tangible results off the field. The team now hosts weekly Bible studies every Thursday, “and guys have been showing up every time,” said Wiltz. Teachers and school staff have even noted a dramatic shift in player behavior in the classroom, “they don’t want any issues at school because they value their standing on the team.” Roster numbers reflect this growing trust: after finishing 2025 with just over 20 players, Broadmoor entered the season with 45 players, all of whom are bought into the staff’s new direction.

Under Wiltz’s philosophy of “mind over matter,” the Buccaneers underwent intense military-style conditioning, including running the levees at LSU and pulling school buses. That kind of investment and effort with the boys has reignited that local support, said Wiltz. The Broadmoor High community has rallied behind the team, led by the Alumni Classes of 1980 and 1981, who have fed the players throughout the summer and assisted with essential team needs. “People have come out to support them, and it’s made such a difference.”

Wiltz told me that the team’s shift in identity first revealed itself during a preseason jamboree against Belaire. Trailing early, the Buccaneers put together a goal-line fourth-down stand on the 5-yard line. “That moment signaled a breakthrough in competitiveness and understanding for us”, Wiltz recalled. Linebacker Aiden Ingram has anchored the defense, racking up over 30 tackles through three games and serving as a vocal leader.

Travoris Scott and Braelen Porter continue to make key contributions on the defensive side. Starting quarterback Quinton Williams suffered a non-throwing arm fracture during Game 1 and is expected to return “in about three weeks.” Broadmoor has adapted behind backup quarterback Brandon Moses and Braelen Porter, who is taking snaps at QB while maintaining his role in the secondary.

Despite the strong start, Coach Wiltz and his staff remain focused on the bigger picture. With seven regular-season games remaining, the team is entering the toughest part of its schedule.”We try to make sure they stay sound-minded,” Wiltz noted. “Just because we’re 3-0 doesn’t mean anything-that’s just three wins. We know we’re playing quality and tough teams now.” Up next in Week 4 is a showdown with Madison Prep. Coach Wiltz said that Broadmoor’s immediate focus is slowing down Madison Prep’s high-powered rushing attack and containing their dual-threat backfield.

Wiltz said that Broadmoor’s history does include a 1966 state championship and a 1992 state runner-up finish, and a long tradition of postseason appearances. While a 3-0 start is only the beginning, the Buccaneers are proving that persistent faith, discipline, and hard work have been enough, at least for now, and that they are the GeauxPreps Football Team of the Week.
