Nine TDs, Three Takeaways: Grace, Mazyck Earn GeauxPreps Week 2 Honors
by Marshall Loeffler // GeauxPreps.com
Jack Grace of Country Day gets this week’s nod for setting the state’s new single-game record for passing touchdowns, with nine against The Willow School on Thursday. The previous state record of eight touchdown passes was shared by Evangel Christian QB Dez Duron, who set the mark against Springhill in 2008, and Peyton Houston, who matched it against Captain Shreve in a barnburner two years ago.

The sophomore Cajuns passer threw for 576 yards in Country Day’s 70–35 victory, completing 37 of 46 passes and spreading the ball around throughout the game. KB Brewer led the way with eight catches for 129 yards and four touchdowns, and Curtis McAllister added eight catches for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Preston Snyder, Paul Micken, and Colin Snyder also caught TD passes from Grace to get to the historic number.
With that game, Grace now sits atop a list of legendary Louisiana quarterbacks and has two seasons after this one to add to his career total. The Cajuns travel to Sacred Heart in Ville Platte in Week 3, but while the Cajuns get ready for a two-game road trip, the night that Jack Grace had on September 10th will live on in the record books until someone else comes for it, of course. Jack’s record-setting night for Country Day is why he is this week’s GeauxPreps Offensive Player of the Week.
Offensive Total Team Effort
Delcambre is 2-0 for the second straight year after a 58-7 win over Berchman’s Academy and is averaging 46 points per game. Rix Robin has been a dual-threat, finding receivers and scrambling when needed, and has had some help. Benny Roy and Adrian Godette connected on a HB pass, and Lynkon Delcambre also scored on a long pass play, as well as Levi Landry on a fourth-down run where he went untouched to the left to the end zone. The Panthers are on the road again in Week 3 at Pickering to find out if they can keep this offense on a roll.
GeauxPreps Week 2 Defensive Player of the Week: Daniel Mazyck, LB/DB, DeRidder
DeRidder senior Daniel Mazyck had a masterful performance at home against Many, with three total touchdowns and three total turnovers forced. Mazyck intercepted two passes for touchdown returns, forced a fumble, had four total tackles, and also had a 55-yard rushing touchdown and almost 40 punt return yards as well. He is part of a senior group that works really well together, having played with the same core coaching staff for their entire career; “It all starts with Coach Parm (Head Coach Brad Parmley). We put our trust in him, and had us ready to go for this game,” Mazyck said after the game.

After the 49-20 win over Many, Mazyck added, “Every time we prepare as hard as we’ve prepared this week, we’ve gone out and executed that way, and our guys up front did their job tonight and allowed us to just run around at full speed.” It seemed like any time that Many tried to draw up a big play, Mazyck was there to take it away, and that’s why he is this week’s GeauxPreps Defensive Player of the Week.

The JS Clark Bulldogs earned the school’s first varsity football victory behind a defense carried by a number of young players. The Bulldogs piled up at least seven sacks, a forced fumble and five passes defended, according to Head Coach Jestin Kelly. Freshman Demontrae Eave led the charge with 13 total tackles and three sacks, while senior Kevin Johnwell Jr. added three sacks. Senior linebacker D’Marcus Gloston had seven tackles, two tackles for loss and a forced fumble.
Senior Austin Simon rushed for 53 yards and a touchdown on offense before adding a sack and pass breakup on defense. Jeremy Sonnier caught six passes on offense and also recorded three tackles at cornerback. Colen Hall said after the game, “This is wonderful; we came a long way from JV, and look where we’re at now! You gotta trust the process, you gotta be a dog.” Well said, Colen.
