Bravo Back-2-Back at the Buzzer

Denham Springs kicker Jonathan Bravo delivered another clutch boot, hitting a game-winning field goal at the buzzer to lift the Yellow Jackets over East Ascension, 20-17. This marks his second consecutive game-winner, as Bravo also sealed a 16-13 victory over Woodlawn with a late field goal last week.

The Tale of Three Running Backs

Mandeville’s Nate Sheppard has been on an absolute tear the last few weeks but Friday night was one to remember. Sheppard rushed for five (5) touchdowns, returned a kickoff for a touchdown, and finally, a punt return for a touchdown. He broke his brother Will’s school record for touchdowns in a single game… that had to feel good! That gives him 23 touchdowns through four games. 😲

Xavier Ford had a standout performance for Leesville, further cementing his status as a top playmaker in the state. He opened the game with a 25-yard receiving touchdown from Trel Broom, followed by a 53-yard rushing touchdown later in the first quarter. Ford continued his dominance with a 30-yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter, bringing his total rushing yards for the season to over 1,000. With multiple explosive plays both on the ground and in the air, Ford played a crucial role in Leesville’s commanding 41-13 victory over Pineville.

Plaquemine’s Tyrese Mosby delivered an electrifying performance in their win over Brusly, rushing for 310 yards and five touchdowns. Mosby showcased his speed with long touchdown runs of 69 and 64 yards, while also powering through for shorter scores of 37 and 3 yards. He accounted for an impressive 310 of Plaquemine’s 436 total offensive yards, carrying the team to a 41-18 victory over Brusly.

Predictions: Where We Were right … Where We Were Wrong …

Where We Were Right

#1 Dunham vs #4 Ascension Catholic

In a back-and-forth contest, Ascension Catholic struck first with a touchdown swing pass to Johnny Viallon, but Dunham quickly responded with quarterback Elijah Haven connecting deep to Jarvis Washington to take a 7-6 lead. Ascension Catholic answered again, this time with a screen pass to Chad Elzy Jr., making it 12-7, though Dunham’s Eliot Trahan stopped the two-point attempt. Late in the game, Elzy Jr. scored again to put Ascension Catholic ahead 18-13 with 5:55 remaining, but Haven, the top-ranked player in the class of 2027, broke free for a 67-yard touchdown to secure a 21-18 win for Dunham.

#7 Neville vs #3 STM

Neville continued their dominant run with a commanding 30-7 victory over defending state champions St. Thomas More. The game started with a touchdown pass from Parker Robinson to Thomas Campbell, giving Neville an early lead. A crucial fumble by STM led to a scoop-and-score by Neville, extending their advantage to 14-0. Neville pushed the score to 24-0 by halftime, leaving STM struggling to keep up. A long, methodical drive to open the third quarter made it 30-0, putting the game out of reach. STM managed a late score, but Neville had already secured a statement win.

#14 Alexandria vs #6 Opelousas

In a 43-40 shootout, Alexandria downed Opelousas in a game that saw an incredible 27 points scored in the final five minutes. LSU commit JT Lindsey led the charge for Alexandria with 155 rushing yards on 18 carries, including two long runs of 45 and 60 yards. After Opelousas opened the game with a rushing touchdown, Alexandria answered back, eventually pulling ahead late in the fourth quarter. With under a minute remaining, Alexandria extended their lead with a rushing touchdown and successful two-point conversion, making the score 43-34. Opelousas fought back with a late score but couldn’t close the gap as Alexandria held on for the win.

#3 Vermilion Catholic vs #9 Erath

Vermilion Catholic held off a late surge from Erath to secure a thrilling 41-34 victory. After leading comfortably, Vermilion Catholic saw their 21-point advantage evaporate as Erath mounted a furious comeback late in the game. However, a crucial onside kick recovery helped Vermilion Catholic seal the win. Star quarterback Jonathan Dartez was the difference-maker once again, showcasing his dual-threat abilities with 168 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while adding 202 passing yards and three more scores through the air. Despite the late pressure, Dartez’s performance helped Vermilion Catholic hold on in the nail-biter.

#8 North DeSoto vs #11 Northwood

North DeSoto secured a 38-21 victory over Northwood in a hard-fought battle, marked by a controversial call that had fans buzzing. North DeSoto jumped to an early 21-0 lead in the first quarter, with Kenny Thomas rushing for two touchdowns and a key defensive score off a fumble recovery. As Northwood fought back, cutting the deficit to 28-14 in the third quarter, a pivotal moment occurred when North DeSoto appeared to fumble near the end zone. Northwood recovered the ball and seemed poised for a momentum shift, but the officials ruled that forward progress had been stopped, nullifying the turnover. Despite Northwood’s efforts, which included two touchdown passes from Jaxon Bentzler, North DeSoto extended their lead with a field goal in the fourth quarter to seal the game.
