Shreve Outlasts Evangel in 153-Point Epic, Peyton Houston Sets National Record

In an unforgettable overtime thriller, Captain Shreve edged Evangel 77-76 in a high-scoring shootout.

Shreve’s Brodie Savage threw for 462 yards and five touchdowns, while Evangel’s Peyton Houston shattered the national single-game passing record with 817 yards, per the NFHS Record Books. Houston’s 49 completions tied him for 5th All-Time, and his 10 total touchdowns ranks 12th All-Time.

*A note here, former West Virginia and NFL quarterback Will Grier, from SouthLake Christian High School (NC), passed for 834 yards in a single game, surpassing Houston’s new record. However, Grier’s record is not recognized by the National Federation of High Schools because SouthLake Christian, like some Louisiana schools that play in the MAIS, is not recognized by the NFHS.

Evangel led 36-22 at halftime, but Savage and the Gators rallied, sending the game into overtime tied at 70.

In the extra period, Evangel scored first but failed on a two-point conversion, leaving room for Shreve’s Savage to hit Nathan Green for a touchdown. Zane Wyss sealed the victory with the extra point, capping a historic game at 77-76.
