Volleyball Power 25: Add No. 1 Ranking to Mount Carmel’s Busy Week
Courtesy VSN
As if their week wasn’t eventful enough already, Mt. Carmel is the new No.1 in the VSN/GeauxPreps Volleyball Power 25 presented by K Miller Gems and Jewelry Brokerage.
Mt Carmel received seven of the nine first-place votes from the Power 25 panel from across the state.
The timing of the No.1 ranking comes at the onset of what will be an eventful week for the Volley Cubs. Tuesday’s match with East Jefferson is Senior Night and should also be Ricaud’s 100th career coaching win (99-21). Then Wednesday they face rival and previous No.1 Dominican for their home Pink Game.
Not being No.1 already in the Power 25 has been used as motivation for her players by Mt. Carmel coach Taylor Ricaud.
“Every week I send (the Power 25) to them and say this should put a little chip on your shoulders,” said Ricaud. “People are doubting you as the No.1 team in the state.”
Ricaud feels the ranking is validation for the season Mt. Carmel is having.
“I think each week we come out and prove that we are a powerful team when we play to our best. Player-to-player I truly do believe that we have some of the best players in the state.”
St. Michael at 21-1 moves up one spot into the No.2 position and received the other two first-place votes.
Dominican lost twice during the week and dropped two positions in at No.3. Dominican lost Thursday to No.24 Chapelle and Saturday to No.6 Hannan in the finals of the Hannan Fall Classic. Dominican also won six times during the week.
Haynes and Slidell remain at No.4 and No.5.
Hannan had the most wins of any team in the state this week going 7-0 and move up two spots into No.6. Six of their wins came in their sweep of their Hannan Fall Classic
The biggest jump this week came from Parkview Baptist who jumped four spots at No.14. A thrilling five-set win vs No.13 E.D. White highlighted their week.
Chapelle experienced both ends of the emotional spectrum beating then No.1 Dominican on Thursday, then going 0-3 Saturday at the AOL Tournament against three unranked teams. Chapelle drops three spots and is tied with Central Catholic for 24th.
