2022 Preview

Andy Boone has never backed down from a challenge whether it was facing a 4th-and-20 or leading his team into battle against a formidable opponent.

There will be no diverting from that thought process in 2022 as the Mustangs prepare for one of the biggest seasons in school history. Despite the loss of four starters on offense, Boone believes that his unit could turn in an even better performance this season.

Avoyelles returns the majority of its running attack that accumulated over 5,600 rushing yards with three tailbacks that rushed for over 1,000 yards each. With its double-wing offense, the Mustangs are sure to control the ground game this season with the return of Carlos Bazert (886 yards, 8 TDs), Dacaeryn Sampson (1,333 yards, 16 TDs) and Josh Williams (1,043 yards, 10 TDs).

What has set the Avoyelles apart from most teams and what has played into the success of the program since Boone's arrival his willingness to take chances. The Mustangs never punt plus they go for two points after every touchdown and always onside kick after every score. Since installing that mindset in his team, Boone has jumpstarted the program into one of the most respected across the state.

Defensively, the Mustangs bring back six starters from last season but with Boone's philosophy of making every attempt to control the game on offense there could be ample time for the unit to find its footing and practice more reps for the big moments.

On the 2022 slate are some huge games for Avoyelles highlighted by non-district showdowns at Teurlings Catholic (Sept. 9), at Eunice (Sept. 16), at home against four-time champion Lafayette Christian (Sept. 30), and at Southern Lab (Oct. 20). The Mustangs are apart of a new district including Holy Savior Menard, Oakdale, Pickering and Rosepine.
