The Barbe Buccaneers will be under the leadership of first-time head coach Skeet Owens, but the coaching veteran is no stranger to the program.

Entering his 12th year of walking the Barbe sideline, Owens is looking to get the Bucs back to those glory days that weren’t that long ago.

“The last couple of years have been kind of the same model,” he said after failing to make the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time in decades. “We could have finished 8-2 or 2-8, but we had a chance in every ball game.”

In 2021, Barbe finished with a 4-6 record but lost four games in the last two minutes of action. Last season, the Bucs posted a 5-5 mark, losing a couple of games in the final seconds.

“We have to finish games and figure out how to win them.”

Owens expects his team to play fast and physical, something that will be needed to be able to compete in the loaded district that includes area teams Sam Houston and Sulphur along with Acadiana, Southside, New Iberia, Lafayette and Comeaux.

The Bucs return 12 total starters - five on offense and seven defense.

Senior Carson Sanford is back to take the snaps behind center, a year after throwing for 1,354 yards and 19 touchdowns to just three interceptions. Sanford was thrust into the starting role in week three of the season last year. His favorite returning target will be Landon Victorian who caught 27 passes for 450 yards and four scores.

The running game sees the return of 1,000-yard rusher Eric Jones who marched to 1,050 yards on 147 carries and 11 TDs. Jones, a junior, averaged 7.1 yards per carry.

On defense, senior Travis Pradia (67 tackles, two sacks) and junior Dane Dixon (40 tackles, two interceptions), look to lead a pack that will rely on its physicality and speed to contend for the district title.

Barbe will take on Jennings in a scrimmage on Thursday, August 17 and will take on DeRidder on Aug. 24 in the Sulphur Jamboree.

The Bucs will open the regular season on Sept. 1 at long-time rival LaGrange.
