2023 Preview

by Caleb Wardell, GeauxPreps.com Contributor

After graduating over 45 players over the past two seasons including stars Gray Walters and Pearce Russell, Coach Reynolds Moore enters the 2023 season with his least experienced team at Benton. Despite only returning 5 previous starters, the Tigers are still undoubtedly a talented and well-coached group. Benton looks to build on their emergence as a program following an 8-4 overall record and a 6-1 record in their district a season ago.

Returning starters for the Tigers include junior offensive lineman Witt Van Hoy and senior running back Greg Manning. Van Hoy intimidates opposing defensive lines with his 6’7 290 frame and has received offers from Louisiana Tech and UL Monroe. Manning is coming off a stellar season with over 1,850 yards to go with 33 total touchdowns, proving himself to be a reliable well-rounded back for Benton.

Looking at the schedule, Benton takes Northwood on the road, Texas High in Texarkana, and Newman at home to round out their non-district play. In the district, the Tigers notably face off with defending district champion Airline on the road in week four, play Byrd on the road in week five, and close out the regular season with a home game versus Parkway.

With a tough road schedule and competitive non-district competition, the Tigers’ new faces will have several opportunities to prove themselves throughout the season. Led by first-time starting quarterback Jeffrey King in his senior season, Benton should be an extremely competitive team in a stacked district.
