2023 Preview

by Daniel Green, GeauxPreps.com Contributor

After reaching the second round of the playoffs in 2022, the Erath Bobcats, under sixth-year head coach Eric LeBlanc, are aiming for bigger and better things in 2023 as they return the majority of their offense from a team which had a record of 8-4.

“We are returning all of our skill position players on offense,” LeBlanc said. “We are looking to build off of the success we had last year.”

Last year’s offensive production primarily ran through three players - quarterback Lynkon Romero, wide receiver Christian Pillette and running back Mason Hebert. All three are returning to reprise those roles as Romero, a senior, was a threat to run the ball as well as pass, completing about 55 percent of his passes for 1,653 yards and 16 touchdowns. Pillette was the primary target for Romero as he reeled in 44 passes for 843 yards and eight touchdowns. Hebert was the threat out of the backfield for the Bobcats as he rushed for 708 yards on 118 carries with five touchdowns.

With only five starters coming back on defense, the Bobcats will have to gain some valuable experience with their new starters. However, there are some solid performers back for Erath and the 4-2-5 scheme it employs on the defensive side of the ball. Hebert is a key players at linebacker for the Bobcats, while Pillette is the leading returning tackler for Erath as he had 54 stops and an interception in 2022.
