Our summer recruit spotlight begins with Calvary Baptist’s Abram Wardell as he prepares to enter his junior year as the Cavaliers starting quarterback.

As a sophomore, Wardell led Calvary Baptist deep into the postseason as he finished with 2,410 total passing yards as well as 33 touchdowns. For his efforts on the field, Wardell was named to the District 1-2A team as well as the LFCA all-state squad.

GeauxPreps.com caught up with Wardell for a Q&A session asking about his offseason progress, his goals for the 2023 season and his biggest motivation.

In addition to a strong offseason, you have put in a ton of work in 7-on-7 competition. What have you been able to improve on during that time.

I played 7v7 with most of my teammates. I’ve improved my anticipation of receivers and getting on the same wavelength as my guys.

What are your personal goals for the 2023 football season? How will accomplishing those goals help the overall team goals?

My goal is to win a state championship and whatever personal accomplishments come with that is good, but I’m going to take it one win at a time.

Last season you had to work hard to be named QB1. Talk about your journey to help prepare you for that spot and the perseverance it takes to lead a high-powered offense like Calvary Baptist.

Last season I had to step it up and change to another gear to be able to win the starting job. It was hard at times to persevere through the competition and see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it shaped me to who I am today. Once I got the job I never looked back and we took off as a team.

How would you describe your game and also how would you describe your mentality on and off the field?

I would describe my game as methodical, but if the play breaks down, I can move until a receiver is open or I can tuck the ball and run. My mentality is I’m always going to be the calmest when adversity strikes, never too high and never too low, but I’m ultra-competitive.

What’s your biggest motivation? What keeps your motor running in the 4th quarter when you are mentally and physically exhausted?

My biggest motivation is proving people wrong and winning. I hate to lose and will do whatever it takes to help our team win.

What’s your favorite non-football hobby? What are you doing if you aren’t at school/work/practice?

My favorite hobby is just hanging out with my friends whether we are swimming, playing pickup basketball, or working out.
