The Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s executive committee sailed smoothly through the first day of its annual summer meetings where it entertained a host of requests and appeals before approving championship locations for the next two years.

Among the list of agenda items that highlighted the day was the approval of North Iberville High School for membership. The school, which closed in 2009 and has served as a site for STEM activities, has plans to reopen its doors in August with hopes of fielding a football team as well as other sponsored sports.

The school’s enrollment will allow it to compete in Class 1A but will not be eligible for state championship honors until the next reclassification period.

Championship sites for the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 sports seasons were approved by the executive committee following a short intermission. The Lake Charles and Sulphur areas were awarded bids for the Non-Select sports of baseball, softball and boys basketball as well as swimming.

Hammond was awarded the opportunity to host girls basketball and soccer once again.

On the carousel are the sports of powerlifting which moves from Monroe to Lafayette while Shreveport welcomes the wrestling state championships back. Tennis championships will remain in Monroe.

The meetings are scheduled to continue Thursday morning beginning at 9 a.m. with discussions on what a Select and Non-Select member school shall be called as well as possible changes to the playoff format for multiple sports.
