Lyle Fitte has been named the GeauxPreps Class 2A Coach of the Year after leading South Plaquemines to their third state championship in school history. Fitte, a former player for the South Plaquemines Hurricanes who helped lead the team to state title games as a junior and senior, returned to his alma mater with a wealth of experience and guided the team to an unforgettable season.
Under his leadership, the Hurricanes posted a 10-3 record, navigating a tough regular season before embarking on a thrilling playoff run. In the Regional round, South Plaquemines defeated No. 18 East Feliciana 21-6, setting the tone for what would be a dominant postseason. The team followed that with a 42-18 victory over No. 7 Mangham in the Quarterfinals and a hard-fought 20-14 win over No. 6 Logansport in the Semifinals.
The state championship game pitted South Plaquemines against the top-ranked Haynesville, with a perfect season on the line. But Fitte’s squad showed resilience and grit, rallying in the second half to score 14 unanswered points and secure a 20-7 victory, claiming their first title since 2008 and spoiling Haynesville’s undefeated season. Jy’heim Williams was named Most Outstanding Player, scoring all three of South Plaquemines’ touchdowns and also picking off a late Haynesville pass to seal the victory.
Reflecting on the journey in the state championship postgame interview, Fitte shared, “I’m proud of these guys. It’s been a long 8 years for me, to come back to my alma mater and be blessed with this opportunity.”
This state title victory marked the school’s third state championship, and Lyle Fitte’s ability to guide his team through a challenging playoff gauntlet and secure the ultimate prize earned him the GeauxPreps Class 2A Coach of the Year honor.
