The Extra Point: Football Tidbits and More from Week 2

Running Backs Rule the Weekend

Leesville’s Xavier Ford was one of our Most Outstanding Players on offense last week. He might just win it again.

Mandeville’s Nate Sheppard had 6, yes, 6 touchdowns in their win over Madison Prep, 52-43.

Doug Viltz of Teurlings Catholic with 248 yards and 2 touchdowns in their victory over Sam Houston. He shouts out the offensive line as well.

Tashod Badon of Pearl River rushed for 226 yards and 6 touchdowns in their 64-22 victory over South Lafourche

Booming Kick

St. Louis Catholic’s Zachry Sugandi-Truitt hits a 59 yard field goal!

Predictions: Where we were right … Where we were wrong …

Where we were right…

Union Parish vs Alexandria

Alexandria went on the road and “stood on business” … as the kids say. Karsen Sellers and Jimmie Duncan had it flowing and carved up the Union Parish secondary. The Trojans took down the defending Division III state champions, 41-12.

Sam Houston vs Teurlings Catholic

Sam Houston Running Back Drew Bailey was one of our Most Outstanding Players last week but his efforts were not enough this week. The Teurlings Catholic offensive line cleared the way for Doug Viltz to run for 248 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Teurlings took care of business in a 48-21 victory.

Acadiana vs Zachary

Acadiana and Zachary played deep into Saturday night. The Broncos and Rams came out hot, trading touchdowns. At the half, they were tied 22-22, and it stayed that way until the 4th quarter. Acadiana moved ahead by two touchdowns late but Zachary mounted a comeback. The Broncos scored to cut the lead to 8 with two minutes on the clock. Acadiana’s stars stepped up when it counted. A late touchdown by Jonah Gauthier and a diving interception by Dalyn Lewis cemented the win for the Rams.

Where we were wrong…

Neville vs Calvary

In our first nominee for game of the year, Calvary and Neville traded blows until the final minute. Neville’s defense buckled down and made the plays to keep Abram Wardell (6 touchdown passes) and Kolby Thomas (4 touchdown catches) out of the endzone one final time. Neville’s Jayson Parker iced the game with a tipped pass on Wardell’s 4th down attempt in the final minutes. Neville moves to 2-0 after defeating another great Shreveport squad.

Catholic High vs St. Thomas More

In a defensive struggle/turnover competition that saw only 6 points at halftime, there were plenty of fireworks in the second half. First order of business, I have to shout out Brian Broussard Jr. of STM who had yet another interception after four (4) last week. Catholic High recovered a fumble late in the game and struck quickly. Baylor Graves hits Amari Clayton for a go-ahead 38 yard touchdown pass. The Bears hold on for an 18-14 victory.
