Team preview
by Matthew Louviere
The 2023 Yellow Jackets will be looking to continue their upward trend after going 3-7 last season in head coach Josh Lierman’s first year at the helm.
Senior quarterback Allen Hamilton makes his return after leading the Yellow Jackets for the first time last year, ending his first season as starting QB with 1,644 yards and 13 TDs. Junior running back Shanga Charles (1,017 yards from 200 carries) also makes his return to the team, adding depth and balance to a NISH offense that found success after moving away from the Wing-T offense that led them to the second round of the Class 5A playoffs in 2020.
Wide receivers Dameon Polite (junior), Tristan Layne (senior) and Synjaya Hamilton (sophomore) round out NISH’s offense. Hard-hitting seniors Lemarionze “Lemario” Allen (cornerback) and Dwayne Scott (safety) will once again lead the NISH defense.
The Yellow Jackets will begin their 2023 campaign against cross-town rival Westgate in the annual Berry Bowl game. NISH won’t have a break from District 3-5A play until Week 6 when they host 4A Opelousas.
