2023 preview

The Southern Lab Kittens football team enters the 2023 season with high hopes and great expectations. Coming off an 8-4 record in 2022, Head Coach Darrell Asberry, who is entering his 8th year at the helm, believes that this year's squad is even stronger and more well-equipped for success.

With 18 returning lettermen, including 8 offensive starters and 8 defensive starters, the Kittens boast a roster loaded with experience and talent. Coach Asberry is confident that this seasoned lineup will be a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball. Losing only 6 lettermen from the previous season means the core of the team remains intact, providing continuity and a solid foundation for the upcoming challenges.

Coach Asberry's assessment of the team's outlook is brimming with optimism. The 2023 Kittens have championship potential, and the coach is particularly excited about the defensive unit's prospects for dominance. With a potent offense, led by Junior quarterback Marlon Brown, who showcased his abilities with over 1,400 passing yards and 14 touchdowns in the previous season, the Kittens look poised to reach their high-powered potential.

As a traditional football powerhouse, Southern Lab is no stranger to success, boasting multiple state titles. In 2023, they are set to face tough competition, including Liberty Magnet and Madison Prep, in the pre-district contests. These early matchups will serve as litmus tests for the Kittens' capabilities, and victories against such formidable foes will undoubtedly boost their confidence for the challenging district battles ahead.

On the player front, Southern Lab's defensive back Dylan Day and Chase Square will be instrumental in fortifying the defense, while Marlon Brown will have a talented group of receivers to target, with Ian James standing out as one of the top returning wideouts. Jerome Harris, the team's primary running back, will be a key figure in the ground game, adding further versatility to their offensive arsenal.

With a wealth of experience and talent, a strong coaching foundation, and a roster of skilled athletes, this team is ready to contend for glory once again. As they embark on their journey to reclaim football supremacy, fans can expect Southern Lab to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of greatness.
