Team roster

For the first time in a long time, St. James will take the field in 2022 without Robert Valdez leading the charge.

Valdez, who led the Wildcats to a state title in 2019, departed downtown Vacherie to take a coaching job at Grambling State. Despite Valdez's leaving, St. James looks to be in good hands as former assistant LaVanta Davis was named to the head coaching role.

There will be plenty to look forward to as St. James brings back a plethora of experience including 17 total starters. Offensively, the Wildcats return all five lineman and quarterback Brayden Williams (540 yards, 7 TDs) who split starts last year. The Wildcats replace their top rusher, passer, and receiver from last year but have ample options including the addition of top FBS target Khai Prean, who transferred over from Ascension Catholic.

Defensively, St. James brings back most of its front seven but has to replace most of the secondary. There will also be a bit of a transition on defense as the unit welcomes assistant Antoine Carter into the coordinator role.

The Wildcat coaching staff put together a competitive non-district slate to help prepare their team for a deep playoff run. In an opening week showdown, St. James travels to East St. John before a three-game homestand against West St. John, Thibodaux and Assumption. Their final two non-league games take place on the road at Woodlawn of Baton Rouge and Lake Charles Prep.

With the departure of Lutcher to Class 4A, St. James' main target is last season's district champion in E.D. White which takes place in Week 10 while other district opponents include Patterson, Donaldsonville and Berwick.
