2022 Preview

High expectations are nothing new for the defending Division II state champions but for a repeat to occur, the Cubs will have to do it with a very young team that returns six total starters from a year ago.

Head coach Andy Martin is making no excuses for his team as he has scheduled a trio of opening season contests against some of the top programs in the state in order to get his squad ready for a postseason run in November.

Offensively, Martin's high-powered offense will be in good hands with the return of senior QB Blake Abney (1,974 yards, 24 TDs) who engineered a perfect season to help lead U-Lab to its third title in five years. A few of Abney's top targets return as well with senior Josef Hodoh and junior Seth Gale leading the fray while junior Riley Small is among the tailbacks expected to lead in the backfield.

On defense, only four starters come back from last season, but it will be Notre Dame commit Jaiden Ausberry (94 tackles, 4 sacks, 2 INT) who will lead the unit in helping to develop a new crop of starters. Ausberry will team up with junior Harry Beacham (143 total tackles, 7 sacks, 3 INT) to navigate the backfield while Darrius Vessel is expected to play a huge role in the trenches.

There will be no rest for the weary as the Cubs open the season with three consecutive contests against Class 5A teams in Woodlawn-BR (Sept. 2), Archbishop Rummel (Sept. 9) and Catholic-BR (Sept. 16). The only other non-district tilt comes later in the season with a home game against out-of-state opponent Tylertown, MS (Oct. 6). U-Lab will host Mentorship and Collegiate Prep in district contests with a huge showdown with Madison Prep is schedule for Oct. 14 at the Jeff Boss Complex. Other district games include road trips to Port Allen, Glen Oaks and Parkview Baptist.
