2022 Preview
One of the newest editions to the LHSAA resides in southwest Louisiana as Westminster Christian Academy of Lafayette was voted to become a member earlier this year. Due to standard procedures for new member schools, WCA will be ineligible to earn district honors or advance to the postseason for one school calendar year but the work has already begun to start for the future.
Last year was the first Charger football season in school history with the team participating in the ACEL 8-man league, advancing to the playoffs. WCA lost to eventual champion Berchman Academy, another addition to the LHSAA, in the semifinals. However, a winning culture has already been established under experienced head coach Jim Stomps, who begins his second season at the helm of the program.
The fall will see a more improved team as the 2021 team had just 25 players with five showcasing football experience. All starting skill positions return from a year ago as well as the returning starting rising sophomore quarterback Brock Stomps, who surpassed over 2,100 yards passing along with 27 touchdowns. His top target will be senior Nelson Goulas (708 yards receiving, 11 TDs). The Chargers are a pass-based offense and should be able to move the ball and score points in 2022.
The O / D lines are working hard to continue to make strides and continuity going into the 2022 season. The defense will be undersized against most of the teams they will face, but the speed and the blitzing ability of the linebacker core is a strength of this unit.
Among the key games that Stomps has scheduled for his team are road trips to Crescent City, St. Edmund, St. Patrick Catholic (MS) with home games scheduled against Beekman Charter, Lafayette Charter and Montgomery.
