2022 Preview

After missing the playoffs in 2020, the Tigers produced one of the best turnarounds in the state last season with seven wins and a trip to the regional round.

The bar is even higher this year as Winnfield returns 14 starters from last season including three-year starting dual-threat quarterback Malachi Jackson (889 yards rushing, 13 total touchdowns) who is tasked with leading an offense that will have to find its identity early in the season after losing a pair of key tailbacks from last season.

Winnfield's defense will be its strong point with seven returners coming back including top returning tacklers Manuel Espejel (77 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT) and Keithan Hamilton (62 tackles, 4 INT) along with a host of other upperclassmen ready to bring the Tigers back into the district title fold.

The Tigers begin the season with a pair of home contests against 5A foe Pineville and Caldwell Parish before hitting the road for four consecutive weeks with games at Cedar Creek, Jena, Bunkie and district opponent Lakeview.

Last year's state runner-up in Class 2A and district champion Many comes to town on Oct. 14 followed by a tilt with Red River the next week. The regular season ends with an old-fashioned rivalry game at Jonesboro-Hodge.
