Calvary’s Rodney Guin Earns GeauxPreps Class 2A Football Coach of the Year Honors

GeauxPreps.com proudly announces Calvary Baptist’s Rodney Guin as the 2023 Class 2A Football Coach of the Year, presented by Chevyland.com. Guin led the Cavaliers to a thrilling state title, securing their fourth championship in school history and first since 2020.
In a game-defining moment, Calvary Baptist rose to the occasion on a crucial 4th-and-1 play, stopping St. Charles and setting the stage for a dramatic comeback. With just 44 seconds remaining and no timeouts, quarterback Abram Wardell orchestrated a remarkable drive, connecting with Kolby Thomas for a 20-yard touchdown that sealed the 34-28 victory and an undefeated 14-0 season.
For Coach Rodney Guin, the championship held a special significance as it marked his first win inside the iconic Caesars Superdome, fulfilling a lifelong dream. The Cavaliers, known for their high-octane offense averaging 46 points per game, navigated a challenging schedule en route to the title, defeating formidable opponents like Captain Shreve, Wossman, Westgate, Logansport, as well as securing postseason triumphs over No. 3 Newman and No. 10 Parkview Baptist.
Not to be overshadowed, Calvary’s defense was a formidable force with players like Landon Sylvie, Cole Miller, Hutch Grace, and Heath Gross patrolling the field. The unit allowed an average of just 13 points per game and pitched an impressive four shutouts, making them a formidable challenge for any opponent.
Guin’s leadership, coupled with the outstanding performances of key players like Wardell, receiver Aubrey Hermes, rusher James Simon, and the stalwart defense, exemplified the resilience and skill that defined Calvary Baptist’s championship journey.
