LAKE CHARLES – The Louisiana high school softball season may have concluded last weekend but the honors are continuing to pour in for some of the state’s top sluggers.

MaxPreps released its initial list of National Softball Player of the Year Candidates Thursday that included two of Louisiana’s top prep stars in Notre Dame’s Macie Bergeron and Barbe’s Nyjah Fontenot.

Bergeron led the Pioneers to another state title this season after smashing a nation-best 30 home runs. The LSU commit has hit 62 career bombs. She also drove in 70 runs and has 174 RBI in just two full seasons of play.

Fontenot led her team to the Class 5A state title, the schools first since 1997. The Arkansas commit hit 11 home runs and batted .530 this season.

The national prep sports site also noted that Fontenot’s teammate and starting pitcher Halie Pappion is also being considered for the award. Pappion posted a 19-1 mark in the circle for the Lady Bucs this season.

MaxPreps made mention that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, some states are just starting their seasons. That makes identifying candidates for MaxPreps National Softball Player of the Year a bit tricky. It also means others will emerge and this list is just kicking off the discussion.
