Acadiana

No. 9 St. Martinville (3-0) at No. 4 Westgate (2-1)

Westgate Tiger Stadium • New Iberia, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM

It’s a battle of the Tigers as Westgate and St. Martinville clash in what could be one of the top games of the week this Friday night. Westgate returns a ton of experience on both sides of the ball and it has shown through its first three games, with its only loss coming to Lafayette Christian. St. Martinville was able to rest and and prepare after receiving a forfeit win over Breaux Bridge last week. Will the extra week of preparation play in favor of St. Martinville, who also brings back a ton of returning starters or will a small depth issue play in favor of Westgate? Either way, expect a high-scoring affair.

Other Top Area Games: Ascension Catholic at Vermilion Catholic; Notre Dame at Teurlings Catholic; Vandebilt Catholic at Breaux Bridge

Memorial Stadium • Baton Rouge, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM

Catholic of Baton Rouge endured its strongest test to date last Friday night as the Bears escaped with a 30-19 victory over traditional power West Monroe. The pre-district slate does not get any easier this week with Warren Easton arriving for a highly-anticipated bout between the two foes. The Eagles took a 42-28 win over Scotlandville in last week’s season opener. Can Warren Easton knock off the nationall-ranked Bears and come away with its second consecutive road win?

Sacred Heart (3-0) at No. 8 Rosepine (3-0)

McKee McCain Stadium • Rosepine, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM

Rosepine has been on a roll as of late with only 20 points allowed in three games this season. The Eagles welcome undefeated Sacred Heart to town Friday night for a battle of the undefeated. The Trojans have just allowed one touchdown in two on-field games. This two squads are accustomed to scoring a ton of points but could the defensive units throw a kink into the game plan?

Northeast Louisiana

No. 6 Carencro (1-2) at No. 10 Ruston (2-1)

Hoss Garrett Stadium • Ruston, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM

Ruston is good and has a lot to prove Friday night. The Bearcats face off against defending Class 4A state champion Carencro who has two of its last three to larger classified schools, including Acadiana. The Bears are hoping to get back into the win column but will have a tough mountain to climb with a road trip up to Ruston. Following a season opening loss to Neville, a three-point difference, the Bearcats have rolled off wins against Oxford, MS and Airline to improve its positioning in the Class 5A power ratings. Ruston must play physical and take advantage of the long road trip imposed on the visitors in order to extend its winning streak.

Harlan Stadium • Haughton, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM =

The 1-5A district provides some of the best rivalries and produces a ton of talent in the northwest portion of the state. Friday’s district opener between Byrd and Haughton will be no different as the Buccaneers look to give Byrd its first loss of the season. The Yellow Jackets are taking on their first Class 5A opponent of the season after taking wins against Huntingtion, Tioga and Maumelle, AR. Haughton dropped a Week 2 loss to Northwood but bounced back with a 40-0 win over B.T. Washington last week. Ponchatoula Stadium • Ponchatoula, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM

Another district showdown that could possibly provide a shake-up in the state polls as well as the playoff power ratings is Covington at Ponchatoula. The Lions hope to bounce back from a 37-15 loss at Dutchtown last week while Ponchatoula will play in only its second game of the year due to effects from Hurricane Ida. The Green Wave opened their season with a 37-6 win over St. Helena last week. An emotional game with a ton of talent displayed on each side will make for a great district bout between the two schools.

South Central

South Lafourche (0-0) at E.D. White (1-0)

Harvey Peltier Stadium • Thibodaux, Louisiana • Saturday, Sept. 15 • 11 AM

Our selection may not be your typical game of the week pick but its a well-deserved nod. The South Lafourche high school community was ravaged by Hurricane Ida a little over a month ago and now the Tarpons, with the help of their community, take the field for the first time Saturday to do what they love most. Head coach B.J. Young is excited to lead his team into battle and deserves the attention of everyone in the South Central region. Go enjoy some great weather Saturday and cheer on these two teams as they rally back for a great game of football.

Southwest Louisiana

No. 4 De La Salle (0-1) at No. 6 Lake Charles Prep (2-1)

Bob Killen Stadium • Lake Charles, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 24 • 7 PM

The Lake Charles Prep football squad welcomes, perhaps, its toughest challenge of the season this week. The De La Salle Cavaliers, last season’s Division II state runner-up, invades Southwest Louisiana for a dual with the Trailblazers. De La Salle dropped a 3-0 season-opening heartbreaker to St. Charles last week while Lake Charles Prep improved to 2-1 following a dominating victory over Franklin Parish. Can the smash-mouth offense of LCCP take advantage of the inexperience Cavaliers or will De La Salle be ready for a fight and remember the dismal opening from last Friday?
