Our summer recruit spotlight kicks off with one of the most explosive wide receivers in the state in Barbe’s Jamaal “Speedy” Levi, a senior receiver who stands at 5’9 and weighs 160 pounds.

Levi enjoyed a breakout junior year for Barbe High School in 2021 where he brook school records for receiving yards and touchdowns earning home a spot on the LSWA Class 5A All-State first team. He led Louisiana in all classifications with 1,597 yards on 72 receptions while also hauling in 20 touchdown catches. With a speed that resembles Trindon Holliday’s time at LSU, Levi returns for his senior season in hopes of breaking more school records as well as state marks. He recently posted a 4.40, 40-yard dash time at the SMU summer football camp.

Levi, a three-star athlete, has lettered in both football and track and field (100 meters, 200 meters,) during his time at Barbe.

The senior wide receiver has recently grabbed the attention of numerous Division I schools across the state picking up offers from Grambling, Louisiana Christian, McNeese, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana.

GeauxPreps.com caught up with Levi for a Q&A session asking about the recruiting process, his goals for 2022, biggest influences and more!

What are some things that you have worked on during the offseason that helped you prepare for this season?

I was able to focus on my speed and my weight and went to a lot of camps and used what they taught me and bring it back to help my teammates

You enjoyed a record-breaking season last fall with nearly 1,600 receiving yards to lead the state in all classifications. How did it feel to reap the rewards of all the hard work you had put in?

It felt great, it meant the world to me and knowing I dreamed of this when I was a kid and busting my butt in the weight room and working my butt off on the field

Since then you have received statewide recognition for your performance and have picked up several in-state offers. What are some things that you like so far about the college football recruiting process?

The things I like about the football recruiting process is they are always texting or calling me asking me how I am and about my performance in each game. People actually know who I am now and I have been able to make a name for myself

You recently ran a 4.40 in the 40-yard dash at the SMU summer camp.. Although you have earned the nickname, we just have to know… Who nicknamed you “Speedy”?

My brother/ cousin Reed Boyd. He’s a stud at 6-1, 210. He’s a good tight end so get on him ASAP!!

How would you describe your game and also how would you describe your mentality on and off the field?

I would describe my game as explosive and fun to watch, also my mentality off the field I would describe as relentless and persistent.

Who are some of your biggest influences both on the field and in everyday life?

My influences are my stepdad and my uncle. My stepdad has been there for me when I needed him the most and that is what has made me who I am today. My uncle will do anything in the world for me and wants me to do good and stay out of trouble.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

One thing that people don’t know is that I actually have hops. My vertical jump is 33 inches.
