2023 All-GeauxPreps Large School Football Squad Announced

LAKE CHARLES — The 2023 All-GeauxPreps Large School Football Team, presented in partnership with Chevyland of Shreveport, was announced on Monday with 17 different schools representing 29 selections in the state’s top classifications.

The large school team, representing both Non-Select and Select designations, is comprised of student-athletes from Class 3A through 5A who best represented high school football in Louisiana.

On offense, Lafayette Christian senior quarterback Ju’Juan Johnson capped an historic season by claiming All-GeauxPreps Offensive MVP honors after having amassed 3,597 yards through the air and delivered 41 touchdowns in 2023. Yet, Johnson’s impact wasn’t confined to the pocket. With 1,497 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground, he epitomized the dual-threat quarterback archetype.

On defense, Jadon Mayfield earned Defensive MVP honors after leading Ruston to its first state title win in over 30 years. The senior linebacker capped the 2023 season with 116 tackles, 16 for a loss, six sacks and one fumble as well as a game-high 12 tackles in the Non-Select Division I title game.

Ruston and Union Parish each led with three selections while Acadiana, Cecilia, Evangel, Lafayette Christian, North DeSoto, St. James and St. Thomas More were represented by two selections each.

Completing 68% of passes, he amassed 3,597 yards through the air and delivered 41 touchdowns in 2023. Yet, Johnson’s impact wasn’t confined to the pocket. With 1,497 rushing yards and 25 touchdowns on the ground, he epitomized the dual-threat quarterback archetype. He surpassed the long-standing career offensive total yards record previously held by Evangel’s Brock Berlin, a feat that had eluded challengers for 24 years. Johnson’s total of 14,475 yards not only made history but set a new standard for excellence.

Defensive MVP: Jadon Mayfield, Ruston – Mayfield played an integral part in Ruston taking home its first state title in over 30 years with an awe-inspiring performance in the 2023 Non-Select Division I title game where he tallied 12 total tackles, including two tackles for a loss along with 2.5 sacks. The Louisiana Tech commit finished the year with 116 tackles, 16 for a loss, six sacks and one fumble recovery earning him LSWA all-state accolades.
