2023 SEASON OPENER MARRED BY TRAGEDY, BRAWLS

What was to be a celebration of the start of another highly-anticipated high school football season in Louisiana was quickly overshadowed by tragedy and in-game brawls leading to ejections and game cancellations.

The Brusly/Port Allen game was halted at halftime following a shooting outside the confines of the football facility. According to multiple sources, one person was killed and the other seriously injured following a confrontation in the stadium parking lot. As of Friday night, the alleged shooter was not in custody.

Friday’s season opener was tied between Brusly and Port Allen at 13-13 when it was halted.

Around the state, another game fell victim to cancellation following an in-game brawl between Sicily Island and Vidalia. The game was called with 4:17 remaining in the half after a fight broke out on the field. Vidalia was leading the game 16-0.

On Thursday, Green Oaks and Southwood were involved in a skirmish while tied in overtime. The two teams were allowed to finish the contest with Green Oaks scoring a 12-6 victory. One player from Green Oaks was ejected although multiple players from each team left their respective sidelines.

GeauxPreps.com will update as additional information is received.

FOOTBALL OVERTIME!

Week one’s slate of games was impressive enough but it was a quartet of contests between teams who were not satisfied with just 48 minutes of regulation play. The following games went into multiple overtime periods over the weekend including an out-of-state thriller between Catholic of Baton Rouge and Picayune, MS.

Catholic (BR) 36, Picayune, MS 35 (OT)

East St. John 41, St. James 40 (OT)

Several Defending Champions Fared Well in 2023 Debut

It was a great season-opening effort for multiple defending champions over the weekend as all but one program scored victories in their first games of the 2023 season.

Last year’s Select DI champion John Curtis turned in the largest margin of victory in a 51-0 thrashing of Central Lafourche while Ouachita Christian squeaked by a good Dallas Christian squad, 17-14.

Many was the only champion from 2023 who did not fare well in its first game on the season.

Below are the season-opening results for last season’s champions:

Non-Select Division I: Destrehan def. Bonnabel, 48-7

Non-Select Division II: Lutcher def. Thibodaux, 23-0

Non-Select Division III: Many lost to Sam Houston, 47-10

Non-Select Division IV: Oak Grove def. Opelousas Catholic, 49-13

Select Division I: John Curtis def. Central Lafourche, 51-0

Select Division II: St. Thomas More def. Comeaux, 45-6

Eat. Sleep. Keep The Streak.

Destrehan added to its impressive win streak which dates back to a year ago as the Wildcats took home a decisive victory over Bonnabel Friday night.

The last time Destrehan endured a loss was back on Dec. 3, 2021 as eventual state title winner Zachary downed the Wildcats, 34-13.

Many’s streak of 13 consecutive victories came to an end Friday night following a dismal road loss to Sam Houston.
