Acadiana

No. 8/6 Teurlings Catholic (6-0) at No. 4/1 Lafayette Christian (5-1)

When, where: 7 p.m., Thursday, LCA Knight Field, 220 Portland Ave., Lafayette

Last week: Teurlings Catholic beat Westgate, 30-22; Lafayette Christian beat Northside, 56-21

Last meeting: First meeting

Facts: One of 18 undefeated teams remaining in the state, top-ranked Teurlings Catholic looks to further strengthen its postseason aspirations by defeating a gigantic foe in Lafayette Christian. The Rebels are off to their best start in recent years behind an outstanding offensive performance from quarterback Preston Welch and receiver Kentrell Prejean. However, the Knights have built an impressive resume as well with victories over Acadiana, Woodlawn-BR and Avoyelles with the only loss coming to Class 5A Ruston. A win against LCA would put any doubts to rest that Teurlings Catholic should be considered one of the top teams in the state.

Other Top Area Games: John Curtis at Acadiana; Sacred Heart at St. Edmund

Capital Area

No. 6/8 Episcopal (6-0) at No. 7/4 Dunham (5-1)

When, where: 7 p.m., Thursday, Dunham Stadium, 9611 Siegen Lane, Baton Rouge

Last week: Episcopal beat Capitol, 55-20; Dunham beat Northeast, 72-14

Last meeting: Episcopal beat Dunham, 44-40 (2021)

Facts: In what could help determine the champion for District 6-2A, Dunham and Episcopal renew their rivalry once again as the home team hopes to avenge a two-year losing streak. Dunham opened the the season with loss to Parkview Baptist but has been rolling since having held five of its six opponents to two scores or less. Episcopal has had little trouble playing away from home with an average of 41 points scored in road contests. Dunham has won three of the last five but Episcopal has taken the last two meetings between the two programs. Thursday’s game will be important for many reasons but with a potential district auto bid looming, both squads will be up and ready for this annual rivalry game.

Other Top Area Games: Brusly at West Feliciana; Opelousas Catholic at Catholic-PC; Scotlandville at Zachary; St. Amant at Denham Springs; University Lab at Madison Prep

Central Louisiana

No. 1/1 Many (5-0) at Winnfield (5-1)

When, where: 7 p.m., Friday, Stokes-Walker Stadium, 8991 LA-501, Winnfield

Last week: Many beat Mansfield, 61-18; Winnfield beat Lakeview, 53-20

Last meeting: Many beat Winnfield, 50-0 (2021)

Facts: In a rivalry that dates back to the 1940’s, No. 1 Many makes the trek to Stokes-Walker Stadium for a district bout with much-improved Winnfield. The series has been dominated by Many who holds a nine-game winning streak over the home squad with Winnfield’s last victory coming in 2012. A strong schedule has helped prep Many for its district run with wins over Class 5A programs Haughton and Sam Houston along with a duel against Newman. Winnfield’s only loss this season came on the road at Cedar Creek while the Tigers have just one win against a team with a winning record.

Other Top Area Games: DeRidder at Leesville

Greater New Orleans & Northshore

Archbishop Rummel (4-2) vs. No. 8/9 St. Augustine (5-1)

When, where: 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Tad Gormley Stadium, 5400 Stadium Drive, New Orleans

Last week: St. Augustine beat Holy Cross, 40-21; Archbishop Rummel lost 36-0 to John Curtis

Last meeting: Archbishop Rummel 24, St. Augustine 14 (2021)

Facts: Although far-fetched, a victory on Saturday could give new life to either team as they hope to stay in the race for the coveted “Catholic League” title. Archbishop Rummel looks to bounce back from two-straight losses following a 4-0 start to the season while St. Augustine has won its last two district games following a 49-7 loss to Edna Karr in week four. The Raiders have dominated the series over the last few years with five consecutive wins but St. Augustine is poised to snap that streak following a tough pre-district slate. With wins over programs such as Zachary and McDonogh #35, the Purple Knights know what it will take to top a strong Rummel squad.

Other Top Area Games: Archbishop Shaw at Belle Chasse; Jewel Sumner at Bogalusa; McDonogh #35 at Kentwood; West Jefferson at John Ehret

Northeast Louisiana

Sterlington (3-3) at No. 5/1 Union Parish (5-1)

When, where: 7 p.m., Thursday, Doc Elliot Stadium, 1126 LA-33, Farmerville

Last week: Sterlington beat Bastrop, 42-0; Union Parish beat North Webster, 55-17

Last meeting: Sterlington beat Union Parish, 26-24 (2021 Class 3A State Championship)

Facts: In a rematch that saw Sterlington top its district rival in last year’s Class 3A title game, Union Parish hopes to keep its momentum rolling behind the performance of Louisiana’s all-time rushing leader Trey Holly. The Farmers’ have lost just once this season to Class 5A foe Captain Shreve but managed to average nearly 40 points per game while Sterlington has struggled to maintain a .500 record. The Panthers have lost to West Monroe, Oak Grove and Carroll while wins against Mangham and Richwood have kept the defending champions in a respectable position in the playoff power ratings. The animosity between the two programs will be at an all-time high Thursday night as Union Parish looks to avenge both losses from last season.

Other Top Area Games: Alexandria at Ouachita Parish; Ferriday at Oak Grove; Tioga at Franklin Parish

Northwest Louisiana

C.E. Byrd (4-2) at No. 9/8 Parkway (6-0)

When, where: 7 p.m., Friday, Preston-Crownover Stadium, 4301 Panther Dr, Bossier City

Last week: C.E. Byrd lost to Haughton, 23-14; Parkway beat Southwood, 55-6

Last meeting: C.E. Byrd beat Parkway, 35-24 (2021)

Facts: A win on Friday could all but lock up at least a share of the district title for Parkway but C.E. Byrd would love to play spoiler as the Yellow Jackets look to rebound from rare back-to-back losses. The Panthers have dominated nearly every opponent this season including two shutouts while Byrd has given up 86 points in its last two outings. In a wild-and-crazy District 1-5A, it’s almost impossible to give an outright prediction as to who may win the ballgame. Byrd could certainly get back on track and catch an undefeated Parkway squad off-guard if not prepared for a huge battle.

Other Top Area Games: Evangel at North DeSoto; Haughton at Airline; Prescott, Ark. at Homer

South Central

Patterson (4-2) at No. 4/5 St. James (5-1)

When, where: 7 p.m., Friday, Wildcat Stadium, 22187 Hwy 20, Vacherie

Last week: Patterson lost to E.D. White, 56-10; St. James beat Lake Charles Prep 46-27

Last meeting: St. James 21, Patterson 7 (2021)

Facts: In a district rivalry that has seen long stretches of wins on each side, it would certainly be no shock if Patterson were to break a three-game losing skid in the series. The Lumberjacks have performed better than in recents years and has scored 30 points or more in all but one game while St. James has continued to strengthen its postseason power points in wins over Lake Charles Prep, Woodlawn-BR and Thibodaux. Patterson started out the season strong with a 3-0 start but has lost two of its last three. However, the Lumberjacks have performed well in both road victories this season while St. James has yet to lose at home. Look for a competitive, high-scoring affair to take place Friday night as the battle for District 8-3A could get tighter following this bout.

Other Top Area Games: Berwick at Central Catholic; Destrehan at Terrebonne; Hahnville at Lutcher; Loreauville at Franklin

Southwest Louisiana

St. Louis at Lake Charles Prep

Cougar Stadium • Lake Charles, Louisiana • Friday, Sept. 30 • 7 PM

Last week: St. Louis beat Westlake, 42-35; Lake Charles Prep lost 46-27 to St. James

Last meeting: Lake Charles Prep 34, St. Louis 20 (2021)

Facts: St. Louis Catholic has been impressive since the start of District 3-3A play with a perfect 3-0 record including a huge win over Westlake last week. Lake Charles Prep dropped a non-district contest to St. James last week but hopes to keep its streak of district shutouts alive as the Trailblazers have not allowed its opponents to score in the first two league contests this season. St. Louis’ only victory against Lake Charles Prep occurred in 2017 but hope to break the streak for the first time in four meetings.

Other Top Area Games: Lake Arthur at Grand Lake; Oberlin at Basile
