The Extra Point: Tidbits & More From Week 9

200-Win Club’s Rusty Phelps Announces Retirement

After serving on the Jennings High football staff for over 30 years, head coach Rusty Phelps informed school administration of his decision to retire at the conclusion of the 2022 regular season.

Phelps has collected 213 career victories which earned him a spot in the illustrious 200-Win Club. He is just one of 54 coaches in Louisiana high school football history to win 200 or more games in their career.

The Bulldogs are hoping to prolong Phelps’ tenure as they sit two spots out of playoff contention in the Non-Select Division II playoff power ratings. Jennings wraps up its regular season slate at home against St. Louis next Thursday.

Phelps recently led Jennings to an appearance in the Class 3A state championship game back in 2019.

Brewerton Captures 100th Win As Zachary Coach

Zachary head football coach David Brewerton nabbed his 100th victory as leader of the Bronco program with a 62-12 smashing of Liberty Friday night.

In only his ninth season, Brewerton has transformed the Zachary football program into a powerhouse earning state championships in 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021 along with six district championships as well as Louisiana Coach of the Year honors in 2017 and 2018.

Overall, Brewerton owns a 156-44 career record which included a stint as head coach At Livonia where he led his team to a state final appearance.

Mangham’s Jalen Williams Eclipses 2,000 Rushing Yards

Jalen Williams is the state’s leading rusher by no accident.

The Mangham tailback has been relentless on the gridiron becoming the first and only player this season to eclipse 2,000 yards on the ground. In nine contests, Williams has scored 36 times, averaging four touchdowns per game.

The Streaks

Glenbrook’s victory Thursday night was just a bit sweeter than usual as the Apaches took down defending Class 1A champion Homer, 21-14, to capture its first district title as an LHSAA member.

In only its second year as a member of the association, Glenbrook also extended its winning streak to 15-straight games, the longest consecutive mark in Louisiana.

It had been over three years since LaGrange High had last enjoyed victory on the gridiron. With a district win over Washington-Marion on Thursday, the Gators snapped a 22-game losing skid on the heels of navigating through two major hurricanes, a winter storm and a major flooding event as well as the CoVID-19 pandemic.

The state’s longest losing streak now belongs to Port Barre at 21 contests.
